FROM LIQUID TO CONCRETE

The work consists in presenting a composition of various quadrangular pieces made of cement, made from the development of a new technique of fresco. This technique is inspired by the traditional fresco and its development in the academic environment provided new alternatives of processes and solutions. During the process of manufacturing of the pieces, the image is painted or printed on different types of plastic acetate. This material is placed on the bottom of wooden formworks, then the fresh cement mortar is poured over these images. During the cement drying, the transfer of the images present in the plastic acetate to the surface of the pieces occurs. The images transferred to the cement pieces feature abstract brushstrokes of blue color, which are forms inspired by Asian porcelain and Sumi-ê painting, more precisely, the Chinese and Japanese arts. All the pieces have the same measures in what consists height and length, and with that the face of each piece has the regular configuration of a square. The depth in some pieces range between 2, 3 and 5 centimeters. In other pieces, the depth follows the same measure of its height and length, thus bringing the geometry of the cube. The heights of the pieces vary, as well as the measure of the square obey to a multiple (62.15 centimeters), in order to allow formal variations in the composition of the whole work. All this geometry is linked to a peculiar process, where the visual content of each module has an aesthetic autonomy, rooted in a methodology about concepts of experimentation, chaos, followed by the establishment of an order and perception of chance. In this way, the painting is executed, generating a variety of compositional possibilities, allowing its application in the design, architecture and visual arts.

Belo Horizonte City Hall, through the Municipal Secretary of Culture and the Culture Foundation, presents the exhibition “From Liquid to Concrete”, at the Casa do Baile museum, Center of Reference for Urbanism, Architecture and Design.

The work presents compositions of various square pieces of cement, made from the development of a fresco technique, entitled by the artist of “Contemporary Fresco”. This technique is inspired by the traditional fresco and its development in the academic environment provided new alternatives for processes and solutions.

About the exhibition:

The work dialogues with the exhibition space through its flexibility of forms, relations and languages ​​that is presented throughout the assembly of the work, this makes it possible to make varied compositions in different types of architectural spaces, whether in internal, external spaces or spaces in the style “ white cube ”. The Casa do Baile Museum has a language where the insertion of blue tiles on the exterior obeys an order. In modernist architecture there is the insertion of art within a specific location of the architectural project, and from this, there is a contrast with the work “From the liquid to the concrete”, since in the insertion of the cement pieces inside the House there is a language based on disorder, from these topological relationships that space and work create, a perfect harmonic balance is born between the modernist architecture of the house and the work.
The work From Liquid to Concrete has a wide range of integration into contemporary and modernist architectural spaces, as it achieves aesthetic autonomy, rooted in a methodology on concepts of experimentation, chaos, followed by the establishment of an order and perception of chance.
Thus, painting is executed, generating a variety of compositional possibilities, allowing a perfect application in design, in various architectural styles and in the visual arts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carlos Borsa is from São Paulo, the city where he was born in 1980 and lives. He is a visual artist who works with painting on various media. It uses various techniques, among which stand out: oil on canvas, charcoal on paper, and contemporary fresco.
His works have a duality between opposites, (Light and Darkness, Liquid and Concrete, Classicism and Expressionism) and with this an identity based on existentialist thought is created.
In the work, existentialism is structured on the idea of ​​duality, it brings reference based on the reference of various artistic movements.
In the plasticity of his work there is the concept of contraposition that takes place in two moments: through the opposition between different types of brush strokes; and through the contrast between the support used in the work and the painting executed.
